Abstract

The proliferation of snack products has become a strategic gateway for many producers—both in urban and rural areas—to enter the competitive business landscape. Amid this expansion, halal certification has emerged not only as a religious requirement but also as a critical economic opportunity that fosters consumer trust, market competitiveness, and legal compliance. However, perceptions of halal certification vary significantly among producers, particularly those operating in rural or remote areas. Many micro and small enterprises (UMKM) perceive halal certification merely as a symbolic logo mandated by the government, with limited awareness of its broader implications. In parallel, the distribution permit for household industries (PIRT) or health tests are often seen as more essential than halal compliance, which reflects a misalignment in prioritizing product standards. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the correlation between producers’ understanding of halal certification, product health testing, and their impact on marketing effectiveness. Employing a quantitative field research method, data were collected directly from selected UMKM producers across rural regions to assess their awareness and application of halal and health certification. The findings reveal a significant gap in knowledge and practice, where the lack of understanding hampers potential market access and consumer confidence. This study underscores the urgent need for integrative education and regulatory support to enhance the certification literacy of rural-based UMKM producers.
