Parenting style plays a pivotal role in shaping a child’s psychological development. In the context of modern Indonesian families, authoritarian parenting—commonly referred to as "strict parenting"—is frequently adopted under the assumption that it fosters discipline and obedience. However, this approach is often implemented at the expense of children's emotional and social well-being. This study aims to investigate the impact of authoritarian parenting on early childhood psychological development, particularly in the cognitive, emotional, and social domains. Using a mixed-methods design, qualitative data were obtained through interviews and documentation, while quantitative data were derived from structured observations. The study was conducted at MI Miftahul Ulum Meninjo, Lumajang, involving second-grade students and their parents, selected through purposive sampling. Findings reveal that authoritarian parenting, though dominant among the participants, was significantly associated with negative psychological outcomes in children, such as anxiety, low self-confidence, and limited social interaction. These effects were particularly pronounced in children whose parents exhibited controlling behavior and limited emotional responsiveness. The study underscores the need for balanced parenting models that integrate democratic values with Islamic ethical principles, emulating the Prophet Muhammad’s nurturing approach. This research contributes to the growing literature on culturally contextualized parenting in Muslim-majority societies and offers practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, and faith-based parenting programs in Indonesia.
